Sacred space is a trio of sorts.

June 19, 2023

It is the loving presence of the nurturing God that embraces you and all that has been created.

You think so much of God’s presence in human lives, and you acknowledge God’s loving creation of all, but seldom do you think of the interface between the Creator and what has been created and is being created. There is a kind of common ground, an interface of sorts, that connects God to all that is. It makes no difference whether one considers God and human beings or God and nonhuman entities. There is a touching point that connects God with all.

We would like to draw your thoughts towards these connection points that link human life to God, for you have been reminded recently especially of that thin, transparent veil that joins your life and ours. You sometimes refer to this as a veil, but we like to think of this not as a veil but as the sacred space, for a veil implies a hiding of sorts, whereas a sacred space brings to mind a joining, a sharing, a spiritual presence. The sacred space we speak of is no mystery in itself, and yet its impact on human beings is often misunderstood. When you experience loss, personal loss, when you experience a sense of being alone, you are occupying this sacred space.

In our last message we spoke of love being a reaching out—a reaching out to offer strength, a reaching out in vulnerability, but whatever side of that embrace you find yourself, that common ground that was mentioned is the sacred space. It is in this space that you’re brought into a closer, more personal understanding of God’s embrace of you.

We spoke of your embrace of others and their embrace of you in your vulnerability, but this sacred space is where God’s embrace envelopes both sides, both the loving caregiver and the one who is most vulnerable. It is a trio of sorts, for God’s presence would have no meaning without there being a giving and receiving of love. God would be merely some concept located in a place less than abstract but certainly not concrete in understanding. It is in being part of this sacred space that you see God’s presence.

When you reach out to others to offer strength, to offer comfort, to offer a loving hand, a loving heart, you can feel God’s presence. When you are in need of that recognition of God, the presence can be more difficult to perceive, for one can feel in some way spiritually as well as personally abandoned, alone. But it is in those moments of exchange, of giving love and receiving love, that God’s presence becomes especially evident.

In this sacred space, there is not mystery. There is blessing. There is love being given unselfishly, nonjudgmentally. It can be that some who find themselves in this space are not aware of the presence of that Spirit Center, of God, and yet God’s presence is not lost because your own soul, your own spirit, resonates with that light, with that loving embrace of God’s presence in a profound and deep sense. It is in that giving and receiving of love that there can be more openness to God belonging fully to the life experiences of all.

You can be part of the sacred space. You can feel you are contained within that sacred space without finding yourself within a situation where you are giving or receiving love from others. Being filled with a sense of awe for the beauty of nature is that sacred space. You can experience a presence of God without some form of dramatic engagement. The sacred space we speak of can be a very quiet space. It could be when you are alone. It could be when you are with others, but you are suddenly aware of the presence of that loving spirit. There is nothing associated with this exchange of reality, God’s presence in human life, that is hidden, that is somehow forbidden, that is somehow intentionally difficult to penetrate. It can be that when you feel under less stress, and your heart is open that at such moments you have an overwhelming feeling of God’s presence. You are then in that space.

What determines whether you are in the space or not is in no way dependent upon God choosing to reach out, for that outreach is always there. That embrace is always present. Your sense of being at that interface of God’s presence and human life is dependent upon your own openness. You are given strength, you are given love, even when you are not aware of God’s presence, but experiencing that presence even for brief moments feeds your spirit, and you are uplifted. You are healed. You find balance, for balance is really important. When your heart vision that we speak so often of is clear, you know of this space.

So, this space reveals. It is not a veil. It illuminates, it affirms, it uplifts, and it strengthens through love. There is always a sense of openness when you are aware of that sacred space. Experiencing this reality is not happenstance, for you can choose to be part of it. You can consciously seek evidence of God in all aspects of human life, and in that seeking, you will find that space, and you will know the love that comes from the Spirit Center, the Creator of all.

When we speak of God embracing all that is, there is always a temptation to think of that embrace as a kind of human-generated gesture. We use the term “embrace” because there is no part of your life that is untouched by God’s presence. You may prefer to think of being enveloped by God’s presence rather than embraced. Semantics are not important. What is important always is to know that whatever you do, wherever you are on your life pathway, you are part of that sacred space. There is no part of you as a person, there is no part of anyone that is not part of that space.

We often assert and affirm that you are very much a part of God, a part of God’s presence. God is not just some distant figure. You belong to the reality of God, and because all human beings are part of who God is, there is no dividing line. There is no veil. There is no separation. There is no wall that separates you from God. The common space that we speak of, this sacred space, is merely a portion of your awareness that is directed toward the truth that unites you with all that God is.

On a clear day, as the song goes, you can see forever. When the weather is foggy, your vision is limited, but that does not mean that you are in any way further away from what you cannot see. Human life is in some ways living in a foggy environment. You don’t see all with great clarity, but you can see what is close by. When your life is surrounded by such fog, you can still see this sacred space to which you belong. You do not exist in any way separated from that space.

That space extends from human life through all of the life of spirit. Those whom you know and have loved and lost are no further away in a most meaningful sense, the presence of spirit, than they were before they became full spirit. They may be more difficult to see, but their presence continues. There is no distance between those whose lives are strictly in spirit and those lives who are in body and spirit. Spirit to spirit doesn’t change.

What connects you with those who live only in spirit is that sacred space. There is no veil. What changes is the physical presence, but there is no distancing that serves as a separation to those you love. This triangle of God, the strength-giver, the strengthreceiver, also exists with God, human life, and spirit life. The connection is complete. The interchange of spirit is permanent. It is not lost.

Your life is blessed in ways beyond what you often can see. It is blessed because all participate in this spiritual exchange, this interaction, this enveloping of God and all of God’s creation, not just human beings. But it is your experience as a human being that we address here at this time.

You are blessed in your seeing. You are blessed in your not seeing. You are blessed in your human life. You are blessed in your nonhuman life. You touch God as a human being. You touch God as a spirit being.

Open your heart. Open your heart vision. Seek an awareness of this glorious and loving, sacred place that surrounds you and all that has been created. Be comforted by those moments when the heart is open.

Amen.
